Back to Work

After an unexpected week off that was filled with laundry, gardening,
baking, burger making, homemade sausage roll eating and generally vegging
it was time to go back to work.
So far it's been really busy and I love it.  I hate having nothing to do.
The days drag and your mind goes numb.
Today was  Admin Assistants Day.
Who knew such a thing existed?

I got two gifts.  A plant, that John will need to look after
as I'm hopeless with plants
and a gift card for the Cheesecake Factory.  For $50!!  I know $50.
All the Admin Assistants also got a badge made by the students in Lifeskills.  All the kids came round and said thank you.  Isn't that great?
Oh and the Assistant Principals bought us all lunch!!

You know, they told me there were "Dragons North of the I10" when I got the job
but I think I picked the best school in Katy to work in.

Katy Floods 2016

My Monday "Snow Day" turned into a "Snow Week"
and here's why.
On Sunday night/Monday morning 16" of rain fell over the Houston area causing
flooding to 1000s of homes and closing businesses and all the schools in the surrounding areas.

The Bayous couldn't cope with the sudden downpour and burst their banks into Old Katy,

along the road I travel to work on

and around work itself.

George Bush Park, where I went with the walking group is completely under water
and will be for weeks to come.

There are signs up everywhere about High Water yet people still drive around the barriers
and end up stranded or worse.
Kids are playing in the flood waters which are now home to alligators and snakes
not to mention sewage!!

So far there have been 8 deaths.
Lets hope there are no more.
More rain forecast for next week.

It's been a tough week for some here in Katy.
Here's hoping that next week will better for everyone.

Happy Mail

There has been a lot of bills and junk in the mail recently
so it was nice to receive this yesterday from my cousin.
Just how cute are those bookmarks?

Snow Day!!

OK so maybe not a snow day but a day off due to the storms and the roads being flooded.
What to do on an unexpected day off?

Scrapbooking.  What else?

I haven't done any layouts since summer last year.
I still need title for this one.

Kolaches

We've been in Texas nearly 2 years and this is the first time I've had a kolache.

They sound very exotic but are really just a "sausage buttie"
or a hot dog in a roll (with cheese).

Tasty though.

As you can tell nothing exciting has happened around here this week.

Memorandum Monday

Today I'm linking up with Sian at From High in the Sky.
Something I learned over the weekend.

When you're feeling sad, or worried and stressed by life
it's OK to go out, meet friends and dance.

That's what I did on Saturday night.  I went to the Line Dancing Social, I met up with friends I haven't seen in a few months and I danced my heart out.
And I felt better for it.

Today was the day that mum went to her final resting place, next to Dad.
I wasn’t able to be there but know that it will have been a lovely service.

We have had a decidedly tough time this past week, with something not related to Mum, and she is the one person I wish I could talk to about it.  She would have known just the right thing to say to make it better, if just for a little while.

I miss her.

Winner of the chocolate

We managed to get the Teenager to Brazos at the weekend
and he won the challenge of spotting the first alligator.

John's rules ..........
It had to bee over 3 feet long and out of the water.

Mine was big enough but in the water.
John's was huge but half in and half out so his didn't count either.

The teenager was happy with winning a creme egg when he got home.

Another good day out which would have been perfect
if not for the really annoying, pesky black flies.

A Rough Week

Last week was a rough week.
Made a little easier by the buying (and consuming) of Cadbury's Creme Eggs.
They were half price after Easter and it would have been rude not to buy them.

Happy Feet

My new Rieker sandals arrived this week and my feet are so happy.

Porches

The new edition of Country Living landed on the mat this week.
Well OK it was in the mail box but you know what I mean.

It is full of wonderful pictures of porches and fantastic decorations.

Can you just picture yourself sitting on one of those porch swings with a good book and an
ice cold drink on a hot day?

There are grand porches with plants that match the colour of the front door.

small porches, all so totally delightful that it makes you want to move to
Serenbe, Georgia.

and lake side porches where you could quite easily while away a few hours on a Sunday.

There is an art to decorating porches and making them look amazing.
It's like an extension to the house.

It would be great to have an area like this to sit at night and have a wee glass of wine and watch the world go by.  Unfortunately, here in Texas it is just too hot and humid to sit out in the summer.
But I can still dream.
